The Umbrella

Dear Diary

Dad and I had just gone to the Port. We saw the boat that we were going on. With no idea where or why we were going, I heard the boat engines roar to life. We hopped on the boat as fast as we could before it started to move, sailing away to the ocean.

While in the boat heavy rains dropped down onto Dad’s yellow umbrella. Crashing waves splashed onto my clothing. I shivered from the cold that passed through my jacket while Dad held me tightly so I didn’t fall off the boat. For some reason people were jumping off the boat. After a while police sirens invaded my ears as the boat came to a stop. We had arrived. We exited the boat and went straight to the streets in this new city.

We can’t afford anything we need as we have nothing but a yellow scarf and umbrella. We have to beg for food, live in abandoned houses, and sleep on a hard floor on cold nights. Sometimes we checked stores that were filled with food. It’s sad that we can never afford to buy the food to eat. Today, Dad and I went to this house. On the porch, Dad suddenly gave me his yellow scarf. He had an expression of guilt and sadness. Then he said goodbye and walked away leaving me questioning, not knowing if I will ever see him again.

I am enjoying my life, nothing like the crunch of snow while  joyfully walking past  building after building while snowflakes drop down onto my beanie. Walking through the snow, I pass by posters of missing children without noticing them. Something catches my eye over there in the distance. When I check I see a black wall filled with names and a piece of chalk. Oddly there is a space among all of the names to put my name. I grab the chalk thinking to write my name there. Happily I write my name in the middle of the black wall.

When I finished I stand back  proud to have my name on the wall. I take off my scarf, and suddenly hear the sound of a machine behind me. Concerned, I turn back to see a familiar looking doll in a shop window. I want to see  what’s over there so walk over realising the doll looks like me. I look down at myself and looking back up the doll has disappeared. Shocked, I looked around the window to find the doll. Looking through the window of the door I see the doll again in a different spot. I I try to open the door but it is locked. No matter how hard I try it won’t open. Frustrated, I grabbed some snow and throw it at the door and walked away. While walking away, the door suddenly opens. I stop and run back excitedly and enter the doll shop.

In the shop I notice all kinds of dolls. They all are quite cool, however, I’m more interested in my doll. The door closes. I go to the doll with an odd urge to touch it. As I am walking to the doll I accidentally hit a doll on a bike which is still cycling even when knocked down. I put it back up and it cycles away to the door which is already closed. While the doll is bumping the door with its bike, I notice my doll has disappeared again. Confused, I look everywhere and finally find it on the shelf with other dolls. I climb the sofa while the urge to touch the doll grows even more. I climb on top of the sofa to the shelf taking off my mitten to get a better grip. I climb even closer. The doll on the bike continues to bump on the door. Now the doll is near me, I reach out my hand, ready to touch it.

I touch the doll however when I do, I see a vision  I can’t comprehend. Now I’m looking through a glass. Panicking, I look everywhere, hearing a clicking sound when I move my eyes. I’m now a doll. I see other dolls looking at me. A new doll spins and comes up in the window. Ready to trap the next child who writes their name on the wall.
